Percentages

Percentage Topic is important in all competitive exams. In this article we will provide you basic concepts, Tips and shortcuts on how to solve the Percentage problems.

Definition: Percentage = Per  and Cent . Denominator is always 100 in percentages. means for every 100. we use the % symbol to represent the Percentage.

                                                 % = 1/100
                                      10 % means 10/100
                                      20% means 20/100

Example : What is value of 50% ?

Ans;              Means 50/100= 1/2

Example:  5 is what % of 20?

Ans:            (5/20) * 100 =  25%

We need to learn two important things in this session. that are

1) How to convert % into fractions: ( Divide with 100)

Eg: what is the value of 10 %. in this case we need to divide the 10 with 100.
                                   10/100= 0.1

2) How to convert fractions into %: ( Multiply by 100)

Eg: What is % value of 1/2.in this case we need to multiply the 1/2 with 100
                                   (1/2)*100 = 50%

Remember the following to reduce our calculations:

1/1 = 100%                 1/6 = 16.66%
1/2=50%                     1/7=14.28%
1/3=33.33%                1/8=12.5%
1/4=25%                     1/9=11.11%
1/5=20%                      1/10 =10%

Example : what is the 14.28 % of  21?
Ans:    from the above table we know 14.28 % means 1/7

                    1/7 of 21 means (1/7)*21  = 3

Important basics to learn:
1) what is the value of x if the x value is increased by 50%.

Ans:       x is increased by 50% means it is 100%x+50%x= 150% x.

2) what is the value of x if the x value is decreased by 50%.

Ans:   X is decreased by 50 % means 100%x-50% x= 50 %x

3) x is what % of y

Ans: (x/y)*100

Example :

Evaluate  15% of 200 + 3% of 1500

Ans:   Normal procedure is (15/100)* 200 + (3/100)*1500
                                             = 15*2 + 3*15
                                            =30+45
                                            =75

Trick: 10 % of 200 is 20 .
               then 15  means 10%+5%= 20+10=30
                1% of 1500 means 15
               then 3% of 1500 means 15+15+15 = 45 .

Example : If the numerator of the fraction is increased by 20% and the denominator of the fraction is decreased by 25%, the value of the fraction is 2/4. Find the original fraction.

Ans :  Consider the fraction is x/y
in the question the value of the fraction is given by 2/4

X (Numerator) is increased by 20% means 120%x

y( Denominator) is decreased by 25% means 75%y

Example: Raju got 584 marks out of 600. then what is the % did Raju got?
Ans:
                    Total marks =600

                            here for 100% is 600
                       then                ? is 584
                              we need to calculate %
                                ( 584/600)*100 =97.3 %

Note :
1) A is x% more than B , then B is less than A by

2) A is x% less than B , then B is more than A by

Example: If A's salary is 20% less than B's Salary, by how much percent is B 's salary more than A's?
Ans:

                                                           =25%
